Can your Business Survive a Flood?

6/2/2022 (Permalink)

Floods are unavoidable and when disaster strikes, you need to be prepared. This is best achieved by planning in advance and knowing how to deal with the aftermath once the flood has occurred. Below are a few tips on how to prepare your business for a flood before it happens and what to do after it has struck.

Devise a flood plan

Whether you are expecting a flood or not, one of the most important things to have in place is a thought-out flood plan to help reduce the damage caused to your business or property. Your flood plan should cover the following aspects:

Staff

In the event of a flood, you need to make sure your staff are not only fully informed of the plan in place, but understand the risks involved. If you are expecting a flood to strike, it may be worth sitting down as a team and working out the best way to approach the situation.

Equipment

If you work in an office then it is likely that you will have computers or some form of electrical equipment; this can pose a huge risk when it comes to floods so it is important that you include such equipment and risks in your flood plan. The best thing to do is listen out for any news about the flood and whether it is predicted to reach your premises any time soon. If the flood is close to your business, it might be worth switching off all of the electrical equipment and moving it to higher, safer locations before evacuating the building. This way you not only ensure the safety of your employees, but you also reduce the chance of suffering expensive equipment damage and loss.

Sandbags

Sometimes it is impossible to predict sudden events or evacuate the building before disaster hits. Therefore, it is vital that you are prepared for the flood striking when you least expect it. Sandbags can be incredibly useful in a flood, so you should have some spare just in case. Not only can they help to barricade the flood's entry points i.e. the door where the flood is coming in, they can also filter a few sediments commonly found in flood waters.

Dealing with the aftermath

The results of a severe flood can be devastating for everyone. Floods can change the lives of homeowners and entire families. In the business world, flood can affect everything from property safety to business operation, which in turn can put people's livelihoods at risk. This is why it is vital that if you are expecting a flood you have someone who can help you deal with the aftermath and restore your business as soon as possible.

Here at SERVPRO of Clifton, we offer a fire and flood restoration service that focuses on providing those affected by floods have a stress-free experience when it comes to cleaning up and getting business back to normal a quickly as possible.

How Building Structure can Affect Water Damage

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

Rely on the Building Knowledge and Expertise of SERVPRO to Perform the Water Cleanup in Your Clifton Commercial Building

Many variables must be accounted for when performing water cleanup in a commercial building. These include the shape of the structure, the building materials, the movement of moisture, and so on. A thorough knowledge of how these variables work is an important part of an effective cleanup.

How Do Restorers Use This Knowledge in a Water Cleanup?

SERVPRO professionals performing a commercial water cleanup in Clifton implement their knowledge of different variables to formulate an inspection plan, and the variables are also part of the water removal and cleanup procedures.

What are some of the specific variables of a given commercial building?

    •    Building structure and materials
    •    Mechanical systems
    •    Airflow and water flow

How does water flow and moisture movement affect a water cleanup?

SERVPRO professionals understand the path water will take in a commercial building, and this path is used to determine many of the specifics of a cleaning and drying strategy as well as the equipment to be used.

What materials and structures are evaluated as part of the cleanup?

    •    Structural wood
    •    Ceiling, floor and wall assemblies
    •    Windows, doors and other openings

How do the specifics of materials and structures become part of a water cleanup?

SERVPRO professionals know that moisture and water have different effects on different materials. This information is used to help restore these materials as water is removed, and it also helps them determine the best way to dry the building.

What other issues must be accounted for in a commercial water cleanup?

Unanticipated problems are common in this kind of cleanup, but SERVPRO professionals have the expertise to minimize or eliminate these. Simply put, the expertise of the restorer is critical to get the job done right.

Preventing Office Fires

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

There's an average of 3,170 deaths each year in the US due to fire. In the US, there were 115 victims of fires and explosions in the workplace.

The leading cause of office fires according to NFPA.org is due to cooking equipment.  The next three most leading causes of office fires are electrical distribution and lighting equipment, heating equipment, and arson. There are ways to prevent each of these causes, check out below to see how.

Tips to Prevent Office Fires

After cooking equipment, office fires are mainly caused by electrical and lighting, heating equipment and arson. Here are some tips to offset these leading causes of fires.

  • Make sure to only use high grade lamps and other lighting equipment to prevent from easily avoidable fires.
  • Many people like to keep a portable heater in under their office desk to help keep them warm. This can come with many downfalls as this is a leading cause of office fires. Make sure all heaters are unplugged at the end of the workday.
  • Make sure your office building has good security. Keep cameras in stairways and in every room to detect when someone may be there. Also, make sure to have secure locks on the doors to prevent intruders from coming in.

The Commercial Water Extraction Process

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO’s Water Removal Process Gets Clifton Business Owners Back in the Game

Water damage is a very scary thing to happen to business owners. The thought of damage to equipment, belongings and property is overwhelming.

Clifton business owners need water removal in a hurry in the event of a flood, leak, or any other water incident. Swift remediation means getting back to work faster. The first step in water removal is using extraction equipment to draw away standing water.

Why is extraction so important?

Moisture can do a lot of damage to business premises, including:

  • Warping wood floors or beams
  • Soaking drywall and causing it to collapse
  • Causing rust and tarnishing on metal surfaces
  • Providing a breeding ground for mold and mildew

What equipment does SERVPRO use for extraction?

Our technicians have access to a range of extractors, including:

  •        Free-standing extractors
  •        Truck-mounted extractors
  •        Carpet wands
  •        Deep extraction tools
  •        Squeegees, Mops, and Buckets

Carpet wands and deep extraction tools help us squeeze and draw moisture out of carpets and carpet pads for more thorough water removal.

How can I prepare for water removal?

The very best way to prepare for water removal is to sign up for SERVPRO ERP (Emergency Ready Plan.) ERP is free-to-join. We can visit your establishment to assist with the setup. You download the app, sign up for an account, and follow the prompts to complete a walk-through of your premises. ERP helps you capture all the vital information and store it in one place. You can even use it to make sure we are your first port of call in a disaster. The app allows you to establish SERVPRO of Clifton as your preferred restoration specialist, which allows you to create a First Notice of Loss from the app, or call us quickly with one click.

Using ERP means you’re prepared before anything even happens, which means you can get back to business faster.

Emergency Ready Profile's for Your Business

4/2/2021 (Permalink)

Small business owners have a lot to worry about while running a business. How to handle an emergency should not be one of those concerns. Learn more about SERVPRO’s Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) and see how your small business can be better prepared.

What is the SERVPRO ERP?

Unfortunately, all catastrophes cannot be prevented, which means it is imperative to have an emergency plan set just in case an unexpected event occurs. The SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan application works to prevent situations from escalating. The app, designed for commercial use, is marketed towards property and risk managers and towards business owners. The SERVPRO ERP works on the premise that the more you know what to do and what to expect in advance of any kind of emergency is the key to timely mitigation and can help minimize how water, storm, and fire damage can affect your business.

Our ERP includes the following:

  • A no-cost assessment of your facility.
  • A concise Profile Document that contains only the critical information needed in the event of an emergency.
  • A guide to help you get back into your building following a disaster.
  • Establishes SERVPRO of Clinton as your local disaster mitigation and restoration provider.
  • Identification of the line of command for authorizing work to begin.
  • Provides facility details such as shut-off valve locations, priority areas, and priority contact information.

Is it necessary for small businesses to have a plan?

As many as 50% of businesses close down following a disaster, according to the latest research. Of the businesses that survive, the overwhelming majority of them had a preparedness plan in place. Pre-planning can serve as an insurance policy aimed at peace of mind. And knowing you are "Ready for whatever happens" makes your employees and clients feel comforable that in the event your business is affected by a disaster, they do not necessarily have to be.

If you prepare for the future, you will save early for disaster costs and prevent greater damage in the future. Utilizing tools to prevent damage, to prevent loss, and to prevent losing your business to a disaster, is one of the best ways to ensure the “health” of what you own or manage.

Re-establishing Clean Air Post-Fire inside Your Clifton Retail Store.

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

When your HVAC or an other item in your store catches fire, SERVPRO is the team of pros needed for the fire restoration service needed to get you back

HVAC systems can spread smoke contamination after a fire.

SERVPRO understands how important it is to ensure clean, healthy air inside your business. An acrid, smoky odor that persists throughout your store can upset or deter shoppers. This can happen even with an extensive cleaning of surfaces and airing out your building.

Many times, this odor comes from the ventilation system. Assisting our fellow businesses in Clifton to recover from fire damage is important to the entire community. We inspect ducts and other components throughout your building before cleaning.

Here is an explanation of what we consider during the initial inspection:

  • The type and density of the smoke,
  • Damage to essential components (dampers, cooling coil), and
  • Duct material.

Intensive cleaning of ducts might require disassembling the system, especially when soot accumulates in dense layers. We have special industrial vacuums with attachments like metal whisks to clean out the ducts in place. We can fog a deodorizer to help improve the ambiance of your retail shop. Once completed, your store’s HVAC system can easily circulate the air and provide a clean environment for everyone.

SERVPRO of Clifton is ready to take care of all your fire damage needs. Call us at (973) 928-3705, and we can help you get everything back to normal again.

Flooding Affects Brick-and-Mortar Shops in Little Falls.

3/8/2021 (Permalink)

When a flood hampers your business. SERVPRO is the team of professionals. Their techs are IICRC certified for and size flood damage restoration job.

Proper remediation of brickwork preserves appearance after flooding.

Building materials ranging from steel to wooden shingle siding and everything in between. Brick is a common material, and for all its durability during our area winters, especially with the recent horrific frigid air and snowfall and then thaw, flooding can adversely affect its lifespan and its appearance.

Because brick absorbs water so easily, it takes a long time to dry – roughly an inch a month, and only if conditions facilitate evaporation. Brick is a natural material. Drying out after your Little Falls business floods can leave your brickwork in need of experienced restoration.

Brick that dries too slowly, quickly, or unevenly can sustain different types of additional damage. Some can pose more than cosmetic troubles and affect the stability and weather-tightness of the building’s envelope. Some points to consider:

  • Frost damage – freezing temperatures of saturated brick can cause cracks and disintegration,
  • Spalling and flaking – can lead to loosened bricks,
  • Shrinking – another reason bricks become loose.
  • Degradation of the mortar joints may mean pointing.

As bricks dry out, their surface can accumulate a white powder. This is a harmless salt. Allowing the brick to dry prior to brushing it off can prevent the dust from getting rubbed into the brick’s textured surface, leaving it cleaner-looking.

We have the advanced equipment to dry out all types of building materials:

SERVPRO of Clifton is always ready to help make everything “Like it never even happened,” after a flood in Little Falls. We work hard to keep your business up and running. Contact us for prompt, professional assistance by calling (973) 928-3705.

Emergency Water Mitigation Services can Modernize Businesses in Clifton.

Water restoration service for your commercial building should be handled by a team of pros. SERVPRO is the team needed for any size water restoration

Possible past business practices lead to one of Clifton's urban legends.

The loss of a long-time Clifton business, the Dark Prince Distillery, looks like it might result in new apartments and a safer route for foot traffic to the train station instead of losing jobs and tax revenue. The drains below the Distillery were constructed during the late 1920s.

What is Clifton's urban legend about?

The legend tells of a series of underground drains that lead lower and lower into the Earth, ultimately leading to a special room where one can meet the Dark Prince himself. The exterior path that leads to the first entrance is dangerously rocky and nearly vertical. Several people have sustained injuries over the years after passing through the first of the 'Hell's Gates,' as many call them.

Exploring the interior requires expendable clothing, the best flashlight you can obtain, boots with excellent tread (with waders being the best choice), and at least one trustworthy individual waiting outside to help you up the steep incline. The drains' walls are covered in graffiti, with some sections depicting goats and other horned animals. Bones are also seen here and there throughout the drains, adding to a creepy feeling that many say grows intensely strong.

How much of the legend is true?

There are three reasons why it is improbable that the urban legend's basis is accurate. These reasons include:

  • Prohibition lasted from 1920 through 1933,
  • The building site held a wool factory during Prohibition, and
  • The Distillery did not start operations until 1970.

Without these facts, the urban legend's foundation falls apart, namely that the Dark Prince Distillery used the drains to transport liquor.

Why does the legend persist?

All legends are said to have a basis, in fact, so how did this legend get started? Perhaps the tale started in the 1970s when the Distillery was first new, and 'facts' were added to make it seem more believable. The Distillery's name could have easily added to the legend, significantly adding to the scare dynamic.

The ever-descending depths of the drains may have also figured into the fascination that keeps the story alive. The 'decoration' on the drains and breathlessly told tales from those who have explored and then told of their experiences also add to the magnetism such urban legends enjoy. We might never know exactly how the legend started.

What kind of company would need such drains in Clifton?

Wool factories require sheep, and sheep tend to get quite dirty when allowed outdoors. This leaves the wool in need of thorough laundering with special emollients that keep sought-after water-resistant properties intact.

Some elderly locals in Clifton remember when sheep grazed outside of the wool factory. Such an elaborate and deep drain allowed for the proper disposal of black water, including antibiotics, anti-parasitic medicines, and other chemicals. It would also keep the factory from flooding during the spring thaws.

Unless your business uses enormous amounts of water during its operations, it is unlikely you would need a similar drainage system.

When such businesses need our services, we can often use existing drains to reduce their mitigation costs further. Such businesses include:

  • Restaurants,
  • Hospitals and other medical settings, or
  • Hair salons, spas, and gyms.

When water lines or fixtures break, SERVPRO techs are IICRC certified and is ready to help. Our water mitigation services do what drains do – get rid of the water and make it "Like it never even happened." How we get the job done takes extensive training. We always bring the right tools with us, no matter how complicated the job.

SERVPRO of Clifton's emergency services number is (973) 928-3705, helping keep our city businesses strong year-round.

Can I Operate My Clifton Salon While Mold Remediation Occurs?

6/10/2020 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Clifton for a mold damage consultation.

SERVPRO Listens to You! We Have Strategies to Keep You Doing Business in Clifton While We Complete Mold Remediation!

It might have been a while since you opened your Clinton salon doors to clients, but now you fear another shutdown because of mold growth in your utility room. Do not despair. Our highly qualified crew of remediation specialists know how to rid your salon laundry space of active mold growth. We feel confident we can do it while you snip and trim in your customer area.

How Can Professionals Hide Mold Remediation?

Mold remediation in your Clifton hairstyling shop must occur in a contained space for the health and welfare of you and your clientele. Because the mold is located in a separate room, you are halfway there. Our technicians might opt to contain the space even more effectively by wrapping all or a portion of the room in 1.6 mil polyethylene. A negative pressure air scrubber installed inside captures tiny particles of moldy debris in HEPA filters and exhausts to the outdoors.

Can I Spray on a Disinfectant and Repaint the Stain?

Even though it seems like a solid material, the drywall in your salon laundry is permeable. The hyphae or “roots” of mold organisms infiltrate the structure and frequently rebound if the colonies are not removed mechanically by scraping or brushing. Blasting with baking soda can restore the drywall in some cases, but we often suggest the removal and replacement of porous materials.

Will Mold Come Back?

Mold spores are everywhere, impossible to eradicate. If they do not absorb moisture, they rarely grow and damage surfaces. We help you determine where the water originated, and offer hints to manage moisture like:

    •    Fixing leaks
    •    Installing and using exhaust fans
    •    Cleaning spills immediately

Punch in (973) 928-3705 to call SERVPRO of Clifton for a mold damage consultation. Our trained crew follows EPA guidelines to remediate mold growth, and we have reliable recommendations to help you inhibit mold issues in the future.

How Can I Get My Clifton Restaurant Open Quickly After Water Losses?

6/2/2020 (Permalink)

Did your restaurant experience a water loss event? SERVPRO can quickly restore your business.

Our SERVPRO Team has Efficient Extraction, Drying, and Cleaning Solutions to get Your Doors Back Open as Soon as Possible.

A water loss incident in your Clifton restaurant can cripple your ability to serve food and remain available to your loyal customer base. As damaging as these conditions might initially appear, our technicians' fast and reliable response can help manage immediate losses and better protect your investment in advanced equipment in the kitchen and the furniture and flooring materials of the dining areas.

Moisture and water can move quickly after a loss incident, making water removal in Clifton restaurants and businesses a vital step in slowing the migration of loss effects. Even when the damage remains isolated to your restaurant's specific area, you cannot expect to restore these losses and keep your doors open to your patrons without a deliberate response by our experienced SERVPRO professionals. Because most of our roster has water restoration (WRT) certifications through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), we have educated professionals able to help 24/7.

What Are the Most Efficient Extraction Methods?

Extraction is a critical process that can be instrumental in determining how long before your doors can reopen. Standing water can be destructive to electric equipment and can deteriorate sensitive materials like wooden booths or chair legs. The sooner that our professionals implement some of our premier extraction tools, the better protected these exposed materials and areas become. Removing surface water in your restaurant often falls to multiple extraction units, including:

  • Electric Submersible Pumps – While we have several submersible pumps, electric units are versatile because of their longer discharge lines and continuous, quiet operation. These units can take standing water down beneath two inches in depth.
  • Wet Vacuums – Once the pooling is a manageable couple of inches, wet vacuums play cleanup. These are much more mobile units that can get placed precisely where water still exists and remove the lingering surface water threats.
  • Carpet Wand - With the dining area carpeted, it can be costly to replace all of this flooring material after a water loss. It is possible to prevent tear-out and reinstallation by implementing carpet wands to extract trapped water and make drying more efficient.

How Can My Restaurant Get Dried Quickly?

Drying the restaurant is vital, especially when it is feasible to keep your doors open in some capacity with the application of the right containment methods. Regulating specific drying sciences like airflow, temperature, and humidity can increase the overall efficiency and pace of the drying process. Some tools that can be instrumental in evaporative drying include:

  • Air Movers
  • Desiccant Dehumidifiers
  • Positive Pressure Systems

How Do I Get My Doors Open As Soon As Possible?

Statistically, businesses have a hard time bouncing back from widespread loss incidents. From Clifton water and fire losses to even flooding and storm losses, the building's effect can be costly and take longer than expected. Our SERVPRO team works to ensure that we can do whatever you need to get your business back open as soon as possible so that you can get back to business. Often, this commitment to our commercial customers comes with a three-part system:

  • Job Scoping – Appropriately diagnosing the building's problems and the specific processes necessary to restore them is a vital system for efficiently recovering your restaurant. Our project manager can work with you to determine pre-existing conditions and the particular priorities you have to get back to work in some capacity to keep your business afloat through the restoration.
  • Appropriate Containment – Operating your restaurant in a limited capacity means keeping your staff and customers out of the drying zones. We can build physical barriers to prevent cross-contamination in work areas and to expedite the drying process.
  • Round-the-Clock Restoration – We know that you are not going to rest until your building looks the way it should, so we will do the Our SERVPRO professionals can offer around-the-clock restoration of your property to make drying and recovery after a water loss as fast as possible.

Is Demolition Necessary?

It is always our policy to restore before replacing whenever possible. That is especially true with the investments that you have made in kitchen elements, dining room furniture, and flooring. While we have in-house contractors that can oversee controlled demolition and full-scale reconstruction when necessary, we work first to restore the property to preloss condition.

5/28/2020 (Permalink)

No matter when you make the call, we have technicians who can assist you.

SERVPRO Dries and Cleans Furniture

As an interior designer with a showroom and waiting area in Clifton, it is crucial to have attractive furnishings free from stains or other visible damage. Our technicians use specialized techniques and equipment to restore your furniture while cleaning and drying the rest of your office space.

Do I Keep the Furniture on the Carpet During the Restoration Process?

No, Our Technicians Move the Furniture Before Treating it or the Carpet.

Technicians move furniture off the carpet during water cleanup in your Clifton office space. Technicians move the damaged furniture to a non-carpeted spot to work on it. This way, they can also thoroughly extract, clean, and dry the carpet while working on the furniture.

What Are Some Things That Could Happen if We Wait to Restore the Furniture?

  • Swelling: If the wood framing sustains water damage, it can weaken, swell, and ultimately cause the breakdown of your furniture.
  • Cosmetic Issues: Colors may bleed, or the water droplets can spot fabric.
  • Mold Growth: Damp, prolonged conditions can cause mold growth in the furniture.

What Are Some Things That SERVPRO Technicians Do to Restore Damaged Furniture?

  • They treat stains on the furniture before they dry it.
  • They tent the cushions by standing them up against each other to help the drying process.
  • Technicians use the upholstery tool to extract excess water from sofas and chairs.

While waiting for SERVPRO to arrive, you can dry any buttons or zippers on your furniture and cushions to prevent rust. After drying, you can place wax paper under the zippers to ensure there are no rust stains on the furniture. After our technicians arrive, they can continue the restoration process by extracting water, cleaning surfaces, and drying the furniture.

What Should I Look for in a Commercial Water Restoration Team to Protect My Building?

5/2/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial buildings with water damage in Clifton. SERVPRO is right around the corner to mitigate your problem.

A Comprehensive Service for Clifton Area Commercial Water Losses Is Provided by SERVPRO

The principles of commercial and private restoration teams are much the same. However, commercial businesses in Clifton generally require a larger workforce as well as more powerful equipment to achieve the same results. SERVPRO works with commercial clients regularly to help them overcome water-related situations by providing vital resources, expertise, and experience to businesses in an emergency.

How soon can I expect to re-open my business after a water-related emergency?

The size and scope of the project can change from business to business. We understand that a company requiring commercial water removal in the Clifton area needs a fast response to minimize losses to both their building and their revenues. You can expect the initial extraction process to take from several hours to many, with both pumping and extractors capable of removing up to a hundred gallons per hour. However, the drying process takes longer, depending on the size of the building and its unique material construction. Hardwood floors, for example, take longer to dry than other types of flooring. We endeavor to communicate accurate timeframes and outcomes to you throughout the service so that you can plan for your business.

How can I tell if water migration is affecting the building materials in my business?

Building materials with exposure to water of seventy-two hours or more are likely to absorb large amounts of that moisture. We measure moisture content using moisture meters, which feature a sharp probe to pierce the surface levels and provide an accurate content percentage. A hardwood floor has a natural moisture content reading of around twelve percent. Anything above twelve percent can result in the material swelling. This can cause significant pressure to exert at jointings as well as warp, cup or buckle the material.

What equipment is useful in measuring water impact?

- Moisture sensors read surface temperatures to ascertain the extent of waterlogging in a given material
- Moisture meters are useful in getting accurate measurements of water content within woods, drywall, and other building materials
- Boroscopes can help you to see inside walls or cavities for potential water spots
- Thermal imaging cameras are a non-invasive method of inspecting subfloors, wall cavities, and ceilings for signs of water migration by suing temperature variations.

What can I do to reduce buckling of floors of underwater exposure?

There is no shortcut for restoring building materials. A strategic drying procedure needs to be put in place over several days or weeks to ensure that moisture content is brought back under control without causing permanent damage to the material or the structure. A combination of air moving equipment, portable heaters as well as dehumidification can help to bring moisture contents down. However, technicians must make repeat visits to measure the success of the approach and, in some cases, make changes to the drying method.

When is it safe to re-open my business after a water emergency?

Our team at SERVPRO make an effort to perform walkthroughs with our commercial clients once the restoration is complete. Water can carry with it microbial bacteria, fungi, or even viruses. The presence of microbes in water can make it unsafe or unhygienic for businesses to open their doors to staff and customers. We ensure that your business is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and then treated with anti-microbial chemicals to return it to a sanitary condition. In larger workspaces, such as warehouse spaces, our team can utilize fogging devices to disperse substantial amounts of anti-microbial treatments in a short time. Some restoration work may be a requirement after the cleaning process, but these can be confined to disrupt your daily workflow as much as possible.

What special services can you bring to water removal in my business?

- Applied Structural Drying Technicians (ASD) can work with you to remove water migration and dry cavities as well as subfloor
- Applied Microbial Remediation (AMRT) Technicians can ensure you do not suffer from secondary harms like mold growth
- If your building is pre-1980, it may have dangerous building materials or construction. Our roster includes an in-house Lead-Based Paint Activities and Restoration Technician (RRRP)
- If there is structural damage, we supply an in-house general contractor to ensure your business only has to deal with one point of contact throughout service

What are the benefits of commercial restoration for my business?

Our commercial teams provide a wide range of services, which means there is minimal involvement of third-parties, which can help to keep restoration efficient and accountable. We also have established connections with local insurance adjusters as well as the chamber of commerce. Our work is regularly documented from start to finish in digital inventories. We can pass these on to your insurance provider at the end of service to aid you with a stress-free claim. If you have any questions, you can speak directly to a crew chief or project manager throughout the service.

Unforeseen commercial property disasters can impact your revenues and affect the bottom line of your business. By using reputable restoration services, you can relieve both stress and pressure while knowing your business is getting back to its original condition. Contact SERVPRO of Clifton at (973) 928-3705 to speak to a commercial operator and arrange service.

Commercial Water Damage in Clifton Day Care Centers Creates Unnecessary Risks to Children and Staff

Day care centers in Clifton need to provide hot meals to the children in their care, as well as adequate space for both indoor and outdoor play, art activities (which often means a sink in a central location), bathrooms and often a separate area for diaper changing. Much of these amenities require plumbing, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

SERVPRO assists businesses, including day care centers, in Clifton recover after commercial water damage and its effects threaten to close operations by acting quickly. Our building team skilfully handles any deconstruction needed, as well as rebuilding. Plumbing accidents can lead to electrical damage and when this happens, our team can reduce overall costs by performing this work, as well. We understand that you need to have safe conditions restored as swiftly as possible, and SERVPRO can make this a reality.

Water damages many of the materials used to construct your day care center. Flooring (including tile, linoleum, and carpeting), walls, and ceilings (when plumbing accidents occur upstairs) all require mitigation services to begin soon after any pipes break or leaks occur to keep damages minimized. Our green Fleet transports all of the needed equipment to remove the water and get things dry again so restoration activities can begin.

New drywall and paneling, as well as flooring takes care of softer materials. Cleaning with stiff-bristled brushes and sealing cinder block walls prepares them for repainting. New materials and fresh paint can eliminate many of the odors let behind by water damage, but if you wish for SERVPRO to perform deodorization in your building, please let us know. We can bring in a hydroxyl generator that is safe to use in damp conditions, which allows us to continue working.

Furniture can also sustain damage if cushions, wood frames, or other components absorb water. Metal pieces can corrode and become weak. Fasteners and braces in this condition can become sharp and cut small fingers. The health risk of tetanus increases greatly when such furniture remains accessible to children. SERVPRO’s restoration experts can keep this from increasing your costs, as well.

SERVPRO of Clifton also provides restoration and mitigation services to businesses in Little Falls, NJ and Woodland Park, NJ. When it looks like water damage might close down your business, call (973) 928-3705 for 24-hour service.

Flood Damage to a Little Falls Warehouse? SERVPRO Can Help Reduce Losses with a Fast Response and Service

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Is on the Job for Commercial Flood Damage Restoration in Clifton

Helpful Steps When Dealing with Commercial Flood Damage in a Little Falls Food Warehouse

Flooding can affect any establishment, and warehouses holding foodstuff are no exception. Such incidents are serious because any exposure to excess moisture can cause damage to the food or make it toxic. The high cost of the items stored in the facility means that tossing everything out might not be the best course of action.

Tracing Moisture Movement

Moisture action can cause most of the deterioration after an incident of commercial flood damage in a Little Falls Food Warehouse. Apart from items affected directly by water, moisture also moves through evaporation and wicking through materials. Therefore, even items stacked high above the water line can be damaged. Our SERVPRO technicians can help identify areas affected by moisture. Ordinarily, moisture movement through wicking is limited to one foot above the waterline, so after taking confirmation readings with a moisture meter, we can determine which items or materials are safe to salvage.

Checking the Structural Supports

Absorption of water increases the weight of materials. Grains and other dry food materials are also likely to swell. Such changes in physical form can have adverse effects on the structure depending on the materials used in construction and the method of storage. Our SERVPRO technicians can help inspect the structure to identify whether there are significant physical damages. Some signs that might indicate underlying physical damage include:

  •  Misaligned doors
  •  Stretched caulking seals
  •  Sheared bolts
  •  Elongated holes

 Thorough Cleanup

After the water recedes from the warehouse, it leaves sludge and other contaminants, which make the warehouse unsafe for storage, especially for food items. The vastness of the soiled area can complicate this process. Our SERVPRO crews have access to power washers and other specialized equipment to help ease the cleanup process. We also have a wide range of drying equipment, including trailer-mounted desiccant dehumidifiers to ensure we restore normal humidity levels in the storage facility.

Dealing with significant loss situations requires sufficient resources. Call SERVPRO of Clifton at (973) 928-3705 if your warehouse is affected. We have the resources to deal with the damage "Like it never even happened."

Heavy Rains Bring Commercial Flood Damage to Little Falls Dentist's Office

Routine maintenance helps avoid commercial flood damage, but in the case of unexpected heavy storms, sometimes the best-laid drainage plans do not work.

Locally heavy rains in the Little Falls area brought commercial flood damage to a dentist's office. Due to road work in the area, the grade of the soil meant to steer water away from the building actually directed it inward. Once the water pooled around the entrance, it began to enter the property.

The staff was working when the floodwater entered the property, and they moved the chairs, small tables and other items out of the reception area in the front of the building. They attempted to put barriers in front of the door to halt the flow of water, but due to the amount of rainwater entering, it did not work. Other actions property owners can take before SERVPRO arrives are:

  • Run the HVAC to assist with drying
  • Mop up excess water
  • Move out paper products out of areas of excessive moisture
  • Safety first, stay out of water loss areas if there is any danger of a slip and fall accident

Due to fast action from the staff at the office, SERVPRO technicians got right to work extracting water. Our technicians created a temporary barrier to stop any further rainwater from entering and recommended a repair to once again direct water away from the building.

The rubber mats needed flood damage removal for cleaning and disinfection before reuse. Our detection equipment showed that water did not wick into the sheetrock; however, excessive moisture was found behind the baseboards and under the main reception desk. We used air movers to quickly dry the area and used the Injecti-Dry unique drying tool to force warm air under the reception desk and within the wall cavities. Afterward, we cleaned and disinfected all water-affected surfaces and got the office ready to see patients again.

At the first sign of commercial flood damage, contact SERVPRO of Clifton at (973) 928-3705. Whether it is a single room or the entire property affected by water loss, We're Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Why DIY Commercial Fire Damage Fails Little Falls Properties

7/18/2019 (Permalink)

We can always help you take care of your fire issues in Little Falls.

SERVPRO won't fail your Little Falls business.

The heat and charred building materials and ruined objects are not the only losses from commercial fire damage. When improperly cleaned, it leads to the potential for other costly issues such as embedded foul odors and mold.

There are many well-meaning articles online that detail how to clean up damage from a fire. The place where this advice falls short for Little Falls commercial fire damage is when presented as a one-size-fits-all solution. Did you know soot particles exist smaller than the human eye can see? If this airborne particulate matter is not captured and removed or neutralized at the molecular level, strong odors develop wherever it goes. And that is just one issue.

When SERVPRO assists local businesses with the cleanup and restoration of fire loss properties, we sometimes encounter additional challenges from improper cleaning attempts such as:

  • White vinegar is not the white knight of cleaning soot and smoke residue. In some cases, certain types of residues should not have any liquid applied, or it has the potential to grind in the soot
  • Scrubbing residues can embed the stain into walls and paint.
  • Using left blowers to take debris and residues off surfaces merely spreads soot.

We contain the fire loss area to stop any further spread of soot, and this includes vents. If the HVAC has been running since the fire, there is a good chance the ductwork needs cleaning. If there is a possibility previously attempted cleaning efforts spread the soot more widely across the site, we expand our containment and cover or remove possessions for cleaning and deodorization outside the worksite.

In settings such as reception areas and conference rooms, upholstered furnishings are not automatically a fire loss. On a case-by-case basis, our certified Upholstery and Fabric Cleaning Technicians inspect and determine if the cushions and fabrics are restorable through our proprietary cleaning methods.

Odor control after a fire is crucial for both a healthy work environment as well as aesthetics. No one wants to spend time in a pungent place. Our employees hold certifications as Odor Control Technicians and have access to some of the most advanced equipment that removes odors at the molecular level, never to return.

When commercial fire damage strikes, contact SERVPRO of Clifton at (973) 928-3705. Our emergency response team answers each call with both compassion and professionalism with a goal to get your property restored to its preloss condition, "Like it never even happened."

When Your Clifton Laundromat Experiences Water Damage From A Faulty Washing Machine Our Crew Can Help

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

You can count on the expertise and equipment of our SERVPRO of Clifton team to make these effects “Like it never even happened.”

Faulty Washing Machine Can Damage Your Clifton Laundromat

Laundromats provide a critical service to those without specific machines in residences they either rent or own throughout the Greater Clifton area. Many utilize these facilities every day to wash and dry their clothing and other fabrics from their property. Maintenance and upkeep on the machines that you have purchased for this business should happen regularly, and even with this attention, the appliances can still end up malfunctioning to the point of allowing widespread water loss incidents to occur throughout the building. Addressing these concerns quickly exceeds the skillset and equipment of the business owner, and becomes the responsibility of our experienced, and well-equipped professionals.

With linoleum flooring not designed to withstand an onslaught of water damage, your Clifton laundromat can quickly show the damages and harsh effects of a compromised washing machine. Our SERVPRO professionals have the advanced equipment designed for fast extraction and drying solutions to help protect this tile flooring in your building and to prevent unnecessary damages to the electric-powered units still functional inside.

Often, tile flooring in places like your laundromat gets installed directly over a rough finished concrete floor. While this subflooring can provide modest water resistance, concrete is permeable and can absorb a considerable volume of standing water and hold it within its pores. This situation can provide lingering moisture and dampness to the entire property, facilitating conditions like mold growth and allowing for continued structural compromise and degradation. Drying mats can slowly draw moisture from both the tile and subflooring to prevent reinstallation when possible.

Protecting the other appliances and machines within the laundromat is another concern of our SERVPRO professionals beginning mitigation. Containment of these effects can reduce the moisture and water damage present throughout the building, which can keep our contents department from needing to remove all of the at-risk units in the facility.

Several damaging conditions can dramatically alter the appearance and function of your laundromat after a water loss incident. You can count on the expertise and equipment of our SERVPRO of Clifton team to make these effects “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call anytime at (973) 928-3705.

How To Prepare Your Business For A Flood

Do You Know How to Prepare Your Small Business for a Natural Disaster?

6/16/2017 (Permalink)

Let SERVPRO of Clifton help your small business be disaster ready.

How to prepare your small business for a natural disaster.

How quickly a company is able to recover after a disaster usually determines how successful they are in the future.  Adequate preparation creates trust among your clients and will allow your business to continue without too much damaging effects.

Here are six ways small businesses should prepare for a natural disaster:

1. Make a reliable emergency response plan. To protect your employees and clients, business owners should know all the proper evacuation routes and make sure everyone else is informed as well.  It is recommended to post escape routes and plan throughout the building and keep emergency phone numbers readily available.

Be ready with SERVPRO's READY PLAN

2. Create a survival kit.  Every business in operation should have a survival kit with disaster-ready items, such as a flashlight, plastic sheeting, garbage bags, etc.  Consider storing a digital camera as well to take photos of the property damage for your insurance company.

3. Ensure that you enough insurance coverage. Before a natural disaster is given a chance to blow your business away, make sure to review your insurance to review your insurance policies.  What kind of coverage do you have on your facilities and properties?  Are they enough to insure your recovery if a disaster does physically destroy your business?  Small business owners should also consider business interruption insurance in case you have to close your doors for a substantial amount of time.

4. Back-up all your electronic data. With most business transactions conducted electronically, it is crucial that files and data are backed up and saved.  A company may not be able to reestablish itself without important financial and client databases.  It is recommended to save all your files - including the last few years of taxes - at least to times and store one in a waterproof container at the office, and the other in an offsite facility.  Anything that you are currently working on should be mailed to yourself on a Web service that can be accessed from any computer.

5. Determine a communication strategy. Plan a strategic and efficient way to communicate with employees and clients while your business operations are down.  Also, make sure everyone understands their communication responsibilities.  For example, who is going to be responsible for contacting the insurance company? r who will contact clients to update them? Or who will be the spokesperson in case information needs to be relayed immediately?

6. Consider temporary relocation if needed. If you can't get into your office, how do you continue business operations?  Think about another location that you may work at if disaster strikes.

Be sure to keep SERVPRO of Clifton on your emergency response plan.  We are the fastest to any disaster.
