The History of Clifton City

The city’s name, “Clifton,” is from Garret Mountain cliffs bordering the neighborhood of Montclair Heights. In 2017, the city of Clifton turned 100 years old. However, settlement in the area dates back to when Captahem, an indigenous leader, gifted an 11,000-acre title deed to Hans Frederick in 1679 along the shores of the Passaic River.

The city is home to the United States Animal Quarantine Station that began its operations in 1903, and people considered it as the Ellis Island for Animals. The facility served as home to animals such as horses, cattle, poultry, and zoo animals that came into the United States for quarantine to minimize the chances of spreading disease. Unfortunately, the facility closed down in 1975. In addition, Clifton was the hub of agriculture.

Even after Clifton and its surrounding cities converted from farmlands to suburban communities, it still boasts of two working farms, including:

  • City Green Farm Eco-Center: A non-profit focused organic farm since 2004 promotes urban farming and education.
  • Ploch’s Farm: A 15-acre family-run farm since 1867.

Clifton’s Economy

Clifton city hosts several businesses, including:

  • Promenade Shops, which is an upscale mall along Route 3 West.
  • A hot dog restaurant called Rutt’s Hut, which was established in 1928 at Delawana Avenue on the east end. Peter Applebome described the establishment in The New York Times as one of the top esteemed hot dog places in New Jersey.
  • Several low-rise office buildings are occupied by professionals such as medical practices, accounting, and law firms along Clifton Avenue between Allwood Road and City Hall.
  • The headquarters of the leading cybersecurity company Comodo

The city also has a shopping center, Clifton Commons, near Route 3, which features a wide range of stores, a 448,848 square feet 16-screen AMC Movie Theater, and restaurants.
